  • A fantastic Victorian thriller with a mixture of crime, mystery, family secrets & betrayals.

I found it very involving since the very first page, love the characters and the convincing gloomy atmosphere. I was a bit put down but the amount footnotes on almost every page but well worth the time.

This book didn't go unnoticed, in fact it went down very well. Excellently written, with a surprising plot, it's one of those few books I would consider re-reading. So begins the extraordinary story of Edward Glyver, book lover, scholar and murderer. Glyver always believed he was destined for greatness, and a chance discovery convinces him that he was right: greatness does await him, along with immense wealth and influence. And now he will stop at nothing to win back what is rightfully his.

Murder. Deceit. Love. Revenge. These are the watchwords that Glyver must call his own. His path leads him from the depths of Victorian London, with its foggy streets, brothels and opium dens, to Evenwood, one of England's most beautiful country houses. And at every turn, driving him irresistibly onwards, is his deadly rival, the poet-criminal Phoebus Rainsford Daunt.
