  • 'The Monster of Florence' by Douglas Preston with Mario Spezi

Last year I read an amazing true-crime book called The Vienna Woods Killer: A Writer's Double Life by John Leake about a journalist who reported on the brutal murders he himself had committed. It was one of those "truth is stranger than fiction" book ... (read full critics)

  • Sex crimes and the city

For anyone with a taste for such things, the Monster of Florence remains the most fascinating serial killer of the 20th century. In many ways, the events read like a novel: there's a killer with a gruesome "signature"; there's a link to a murder from ... (read full critics)

  • Who is the Monster?

After Years, we still don't know the real identity of the Monster.

The book is a detailed summary of the investigation seen with the eyes of an Italian Juornalist and an American Novelist directly involved in it, but the thing that frightened me the most was the Italian judicial system and prosecutors investigation methods.
The book is Preston/Spezi point of view, probably to have a clear picture of the events I have to read the "Chief Inspector Giuttari"s Books as well.

    It left me frustrated!
Every chapter was a struggle & the story kept me wanting to stop reading!!

The only parts I enjoy were the little bits of Florence history, his descriptions of the countryside and the colorful people of Italy.

    Great cover too.

A scary and fascinating read on the many mistakes made in the famous investigation on the Monster of Florence. And guess what? The public prosecutor in the Amanda Knox case is the same one that indicted Preston and Spezi for various imaginary crimes while they were writing the book...the same one who believes that a traditional Tuscan doorstep found in many classic Tuscan houses is an object used to put the world of the dead in contact with the world of the living.

    OMG!

  • January 5th -- I'm a little over half done. It has gotten very repetitive, so I'm trying to read/skim as fast as I can to get to the nitty-gritty of it.
January 14th -- Finished it. It maintained my interest in parts, but in the end I felt I had spent more time on it than it was worth.
