Illustrated in black-and-white. This ingenious fantasy centers around Milo, a bored ten-year-old who comes home to find a large toy tollbooth sitting in his room. Joining forces with a watchdog named Tock, Milo drives through the tollbooth's gates and begins a memorable journey. He meets such characters as the foolish, yet lovable Humbug, the Mathemagician, and the not-so-wicked "Which," Faintly Macabre, who gives Milo the "impossible" mission of returning two princesses to the Kingdom of Wisdom.

I reread this book to my wife this past year, and it is just as magical now as when I was a little boy. Deliciously absurd tale about a boy named Milo and the adventure that teaches him about the value of knowledge.

  • I probably would have liked it much more had I read it rather than listened to it on CD. It was full of all the lessons I would like a young person to learn, but it just wasn't interesting. Some day I'll read it myself to see if the oral interpretation was the problem.

One of the best parts about being a kid - getting to read "The Phantom Tollbooth" for the first time! Who could imagine that a book about a bored boy could lead to such fantastic adventures? I'll leave it to others to discuss plot points in this zany novel. This book is fun, funny, and clever. The lands of Dictionopolis and Digitopolis come alive with all of their various denizens (Tok, Faintly Macabre, the Whether Man). If you know anyone with a child between the ages of 6 and 12, this is one of the best books to give them (or if you're a kid at heart - get it for yourself!) Either way, you won't regret.
