I hate when people try to compare this to the movies. Apart from the silent movie they have nothing to do with this story except the characters and the plot are almost the same. The book just has more depth and richness and beautiful language and scenes. It's not scary for modern readers yet it is a wonderful and dark love story. Doesn't come even close to the sappy and overly romantic 2004 movie, for example.
