  • The New New World

Every 20 years or so, the end of America is nigh — ever since the 18th century when, in France, Comte de Buffon fingered the country as a den of degeneracy while Abbé Raynal slammed its cultural poverty: America had not yet produced “one good poet, o ... (read full critics)

Fareed Zakaria offered his opinion on the economic, political and cultural probabilities. His premises is that America's dominance in economic, military and cultural aspects are challenged by the "challengers", namely, China and India. Instead of worrying about the others, the Americans should look ahead and build on their strengths. Americans still have a superior education system (otherwise, why would the Chinese and Indians study in American universities?); its people are more creative (think Apple Inc. and Microsoft). However, in order for it to succeed in the 'post-american' world, the American must try to change its image in the world stage. It must create a more diplomatic, less arrogant image to curb anti-American sentiment.

Zakaria's essay is a helpful introduction to the world of international politics in the 21st century for those who are unfamiliar with the topic, but might be skipped by those already learned. Zakaria offers no new insights but casually works his way through possible scenarios of what the world might look like as America's reign comes to an end. His practical knowledge of the situation sometimes comes up short, for instance when he assumes the British political system is indicative of the whole of Europe, which couldn't be further form the truth.

  • I enjoy Fareed's optimism in markets and globalization, and am grateful for his international perspective; but I'm not as confident in a such a rosy view of economic change.

  • College Lecture in a Book

I couldn't do it! I could not finish this book! Reading this book was like sitting through the longest political geography lecture of my life. I couldn't do it! I could not finish this book! Reading this book was like sitting through the longest political geography lecture of my life. Perhaps I will pick it back up again in a few months time, because to be fair, the discussion points are VERY thought provoking. But right now, I've been trying to get through it for about 5 months and I am putting up the white flag. You're a smart one, Mr. Zakaria. But, MY GOD, you are dry as hell.
