I had seen the movie of the same name twelve years ago and it had deeply moved me. The film focuses on the protagonist's humanitarian work much more than the book. I was quite disappointed with the book for it's focus on the individual struggle and not as much on the plight of the Africans. What is true of both formats is the topic of prejudice between groups (english, boer, german, african) and ways to overcome it. The novel seems to be written for a male audience which I found grating at times. Some of the descriptions of events were hard to believe and lacked subtlety. This is especially so when the narrator is being physically assaulted as a child.
