The Queen of the South

Well, raced through this lengthy novel in about 5 days. Its an excellent, exciting, rollicking, and tender novel following the life of Theresa, a young woman dragged - mostly unwillingly - into the turbulent world of drug trafficking in Mexico and Spain.

There's violence, love, betrayal, more violence, and more love, scattered throughout. I'd recommend this as the perfect holiday read. It assumes a level of intelligence in the reader, and though most of us won't ever experience Theresa's world, we're able to empathise with her in surprising ways.

Though translated from the Spanish, 'Queen of the South' doesn't suffer the usual blandness of English versions of foreign texts. Read it! Now!

I love the attention that Perez Reverte dedicates to details.
I like the fact that his characters are not only individuals following an action, but they are often full of sentiments and human characteristics well described.
And most of the time his novels are the result of deep studies, thus they recreate the environment and the time quite well.

I loved the woman in this novel.
How it's possible to take the side of the bad guy in a story?
Still I liked her very much indeed.
