Larry Darrell is a young American in search of the absolute. The progress of his spiritual odyssey involves him with some of Maugham's most brilliant characters - his fiancée Isabel whose choice between love and wealth have lifelong repercussions, and Elliott Templeton, her uncle, a classic expatriate American snob.  Maugham himself wanders in and out of the story, to observe his characters struggling with their fates.

One of my favorite books and favorite writers. The real hero of the story is not Larry, but the narrator in my opinion.

This book had two halves for me. The first one (which i even abandoned and retaked later) is a pretty still character presentation. Maybe it was necessary, as the characters have many shades. To my taste, what I expected starts in the second half, and it is worth it. It is not just a story of what happens among these people, but their very feelings and tribulations over it, very coherent with their nature. Maugham seems to tell what happens inside their characters, more than what it does around them.
