    • Great fictional view of Dinah and her life. Who is to say that at least some of this is not true? They never really talked about the women in the biblical stories or movies except when bad things happened. The book is just a wonderful fictional view point.

I do not have enough background in either bible studies or history to be able to sort out how much of Diamant's story was research and how much was conjecture, but enough of each was brought together in the perfect proportions to create a compelling read. I had never previously heard of Dinah, daughter of Jacob, but this story really brought her to life.

This is the second time I listened to this novel. I don't remember it well only that I liked it. I enjoyed it again this time. We are discussing this for book club and I look forward to hearing what people think of it. I loved listening to this novel because the narrator did a wonderful job telling the story. I wonder if I would have liked it as well if I had read it instead of listening to it.

Book Description

Her name is Dinah. In the Bible, her life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that are about her father, Jacob, and his dozen sons. Told in Dinah's voice, this novel reveals the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood—the world of the red tent. It begins with the story of her mothers—Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah—the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through a hard-working youth, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past. Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling with a valuable achievement in modern fiction: a new view of biblical women's society.
