After more than a generation and despite its many imitators, The Riverside Shakespeare remains the Shakespeare of choice for scholars and general readers alike. Recently revised to reflect the last quarter century of literary scholarship, it is now available in a deluxe edition - two volumes, bound in full cloth, in a handsome, four-color slipcase. The new, revised version of The Riverside Shakespeare retains all the features that made the first edition so popular - the invaluable notes, the wide-ranging introduction, and the brilliant critical prefaces to the individual works. Additions include the history play Edward IIIand the poem "A Funeral Elegy," both recently claimed for Shakespeare by computer-aided textual analysis. The original appendices have been updated and expanded and are joined by two new essays, "Twentieth-Century Shakespeare Criticism" and "Shakespeare's Plays in Performance: From 1970," the latter accompanied by eight pages of full-color photographs.

Critics

One of the two versions recommended by Harold Bloom, this door-stopper is made for seriously reading. The paper is thin enough to compact the bard's 2000 page bulk in just 2" of thickness, and yet tough enough to withstand violent flipping; the binding allows each and every page to be opened nearly flat for unstrained browsing; and the crisp text is helped by the large fonts and generous line-spacing. Of course holding Hamlet in your hand is always preferred to reading it as part of a tome on the table, but this is nearly the only tradeoff for the privilege of owning everything Shakespeare wrote at your finger tip.

You could buy lesser versions at much cheaper price, but for the man who, as Bloom suggested, invented our personalities, and introduced 3000 words into the Oxford Dictionary, I am happy to pay US$100 as a respectful due.
