I like the fact that he tries to reason the existence of God using concepts like grace, serendipity, and most importantly, love. No doubt this book was written in the 1970s, and many new ideas on psychotherapy have come between the years. Still I read it with enjoyment. One inspiration, I suppose, is the emphasized value of pain. I used to think that pain should be avoided. Yet, as Dr. Peck points out, pain usually leads to growth. We agree that one who can delay gratification is a step closer to success. Acceptance of responsibility and balancing are essential too. "The problem lies not in the complexity of these tools but in the will to use them. For they are tools with which pain is confronted rather than avoided." (p.18)
