The Road to Wigan Pier is a brilliant social commentary by George Orwell, addressing the plight of British coal miners during the 20s and 30s.

In this book, Orwell manages to write something of a news article without being too factual and uninteresting. By writing descriptively about a variety of things, ranging from the atmosphere of a coal mine to the condition of miners' residences, Orwell makes for interesting reading which is at the same time consciousness raising.

  • A good book to read if you're from Sheffield, Manchester and any other nearby industrial city.
The second part is only political and philosophical propaganda- all good, for what I think-, leaving the description of places and people out. Nonetheless, a good book.
