It is very touching to see that the main charactors came alive with the secret garden. I feel that some dead part inside me came alive too. This is an excellent book for both children and adult.

  That's a lovely novel, yet I appreciated the first part much more than the second one, in particular thanks to the passages dedicated to Mary's early childhood in India and the discovery of the garden. I particularly agree with the general message of this book, according to which children can grow happy and healthy thanks to the physical proximity of animals, the contact with nature in the open air, and, above all, love and... a bit of Magic!
  It was interesting and not so difficult to deal with Yorkshire language.

  Mary was a very egoist and vitiated african girl. One day her parents died and she went to live with her uncle, Mr. Craven. Mr. Craven was a little like her and he did not want to see his son because he reminds him his wife.
  Colin, Mr.Craven's son, was an egoist and vitiated boy that did not walk, but after some time he became Mary's friend and they both changed: they were not egoist and vitiated now but friendly and altruist. He started to walk in a secret garden that Mary founded out. That garden was secret because Mr. Craven had closed its door and thrown away the key because if he went in that garden he would remember his wife and so he would became sad.
  Time after Mr. Craven has understood that it is not right to ignore his son only because he reminds his wife and so Mr. Craven became a good father.

  Quella de Il giardino segreto è una storia che fa talmente parte della mia infanzia da lasciarmi nel dubbio. Non c'è modo di appurare, infatti, se la mia conoscenza a grandi linee della trama di questo romanzo derivi da una precedente e semi-dimenticata lettura, in una delle mie numerosissime sortite in biblioteca, oppure dalla visione di uno dei tre adattamenti cinematografici, oppure addirittura da nozioni sparse apprese qua e là. Se c'è una cosa che posso affermare con sicurezza, però, è che questo libro ultimamente mi stava 'chiamando'. Ho iniziato l'anno concludendo la lettura del bellissimo Il giardino dei segreti di Kate Morton che richiama Il giardino segreto non solo nel titolo: l'autrice Frances Hodgson Burnett ha l'onore di apparire nella narrazione, seppure solo in un piccolo cameo. Prima ancora, a dicembre, lessi Dopo di te di Julie Buxbaum, un romanzo che ho trovato leggermente al di sotto delle mie aspettative (basato sul precedente dell'autrice, Vorrei che fosse amore. In questo romanzo la protagonista vola a Londra per aiutare la famiglia della sua migliore amica, rimasta uccisa da un tossicodipendente. E uno dei modi in cui aiuta la piccola Sophie, rimasta orfana di madre, è leggere insieme a lei Il giardino segreto, che per la protagonista è IL romanzo, una piacevolissima fonte di conforto.

  Il giardino segreto racconta la storia della decenne Mary Lennox, che dopo aver perso i genitori in un'epidemia di colera in India, viene spedita a vivere con il parente più prossimo, lo zio paterno, nella sua dimora nello Yorkshire. Mary è una bambina trascurata, viziata, bruttina, una vera e propria bastian contrario, e quando arriva nella sua nuova casa non stupisce che i servitori non siano più di tanto disposti a darle corda. E lo zio non si interessa di lei, perché perso nel suo dolore, per la perdita, dieci anni prima, dell'amatissima moglie. L'intera casa è intrisa di un senso di tristezza e abbandono, ma pian piano Mary scopre che ci sono anche dei segreti, che vale decisamente la pena di scoprire.

  Il giardino segreto è un romanzo davvero moderno, avvincente e intrigante, nonostante abbia compiuto proprio nel 2011 i cento anni. L'idea che i bambini non siano sempre degli angioletti, ma talvolta anche dei piccoli mostri (nonostante ci siano buone ragioni, certo) è una fonte di sollievo, e l'idea della natura che aiuta a rigenerarsi, e del pensiero positivo che collabora a debellare i malesseri (non parlerei di malattie) è molto moderna. Sarà perché l'autrice era una persona forse avanti rispetto ai suoi tempi, e ne abbiamo memoria in particolare per alcune sue scelte che scandalizzarono i suoi contemporanei, ma sicuramente la cosa si applicava anche in modo positivo al suo pensiero e alle sue scelte di vita. Forse il romanzo è anche parzialmente ispirato alla sua autobiografia, in quando la Burnett perse un figlio di sedici anni per tubercolosi. E' difficile pensare però che l'atmosfera prima gotica, poi bucolica del romanzo, perennemente pervasa da un'apprezzatissima ironia, abbia preso il via da un lutto così sofferto. Sia come sia, una lettura davvero positiva e assolutamente consigliata!
