The Silmarillion is a tougher read than The Hobbit and even The Lord of the Rings. It's a different, more distant style. It tells of great events from the creation of Arda and the first two ages in Middle Earth. It summarizes the Third Age time of the Lord of the Rings. LOTR brought you in at the level of the story's action, the feelings of the characters. The Silm stays out a bit, hovering over them with less detail to how the characters feel and the intimate details of the action for the most part. It drops in closer here and there but leaves a lot of room for fleshing out periods of history.
