I can see why it was an international bestseller! Oh my gosh it was a fantastic book! The story was so beautiful and raw. I loved it and you can so easily fall in love with the characters and root for them all the way through.
There was a bit of confusion about some of the plot development and where things were going. I didn't quite get the whole Cont'e business and the departure and disappointing of two minor characters, but the clever way the story was woven made up for the little hiccups.
First off, Venice, what a splendid city to use in this book, completely beautiful and original. The secrets and dark turns really made the story stand out on a limb.
One thing that really threw me, and kind of disappointed me was the actual magic that became a part of the words. I was actually in love with the story as it was because it was written in a way that described the events as if it really could happen, but then with the element of magic, the story just becomes a fantasy, which was still epic and wonderful, but it took away from everything the reader has already devoted to the book and had to steal away it's possibility of realism. But that factor settles down again anyway as a suspension of disbelief and really doesn't matter in the end anyway.
