This book was written in 1998, at the beginning of the New Labour government. I imagine that if I were reading it in 1998 rather than 2011 I would be more impressed.
Having lived through the ten years of Blairite government, reading Blair's memoirs, and seeing 'Blairism' absorbed into the Coalition government, the contents of Giddens book seem very sparse. The spirit of Blairism has gone further, as has globalisation and the evolution of the global economy.
Giddens writes of greater autonomy for individuals, a mixed (public and private) economy, greater democracy, and an essentially cosmopolitan world-view.
A highly accessible read, and if read before we lived through all of these changes would have been highly exciting rather than blatantly obvious.
