이 작품은 매혹적이고 신비로운 분위기를 지니고 있으며, 촘촘하게 짜여진 구성으로 이야기를 전개하고 있다. 소설은 작가 비다 윈터의 입을 빌려 이야기의 위력과 매혹에 대해 끊임없이 말한다. 자기 삶의 진실을 덮어버리고 오직 이야기 속으로 도망쳐 매번 새로운 이야기를 지어내고 그것으로 독자들의 찬사와 사랑을 받아온 작가. 그녀는 이야기의 힘이 무엇인지 잘 안다. 책을 좋아하고 이야기를 사랑하기는 마가렛 역시 마찬가지다. 고전 소설을 좋아하는 독서광 마가렛은 책과 이야기의 세계에 빠져들 때 환희를 느낀다.
