Book Description

The author of East Is East replays the tragi-comic meeting of representatives from two different cultures with nothing in common. This book calmly grabs hold with an unexpected suspense.

This is a really great book that reminds at times of "The Grapes of Wrath" (see for example the ending, with that final act of human compassion even in the most tragic of situations). The description of the struggles and misfortunes of Candido and America Rincon is terse and sincerely moving, but I find even more successful how Boyle manages to capture all the contradictions and hypocrisies of Delaney and Kyra Mossbacher, who represent all of us, walling ourselves in our privileges, insensitive to the demands and the cry of the disenfranchised.

  • Overall I liked it. I felt the mexican immigrant closer to real a character than the american guy, going from 'liberal' to full blown conservative and racist in a few months, which I found a bit forced.
And the ending left me a bit disappointed, too sudden.

  • This book depicts the struggles of an illegal immigrant and his wife. While the abrupt ending was good, I found myself wanting the story to be resolved, but it was probably better the way the author left it.
