It was perhaps the first book to achieve best-seller status before the invention of the printing press-it was certainly the most controversial. Did Venetian trader and explorer MARCO POLO (1254-1324) actually reach the court of Kublai Khan, serve the emperor as his emissary, and journey the distant lands of Cathay for 17 years, as he relates in his Travels of Marco Polo? The question still hasn't quite been settled today... but whether Polo experienced firsthand the wonders of ancient China, retold tales he heard from Arab travelers along the Silk Road, or simply invented half his stories, this remains a delightful read for fans of history, adventure, and medieval literature.

"The people here are idolaters who cremate their dead, are subject to the Great Khan and use paper money."

You can only read this description, or variations thereof, so many times before your mind gets tired of hearing the authors description of the towns and provinces he visited in China. This book was not what I expected. I was expecting to read about Marco Polo's adventures in China, what he did while he was there, how he interacted with the Chinese Emporer Genghis Khan and the rest of the Imperial Court and other events that happened to him while he was in China. Instead this book is more of a tour guide to and from and in China, much of which I found unbelieveable. While many of the places he mentions do actually exist, I find this book has more value as a great work of medieval fiction.
