  • Never thought that TV could have been better than books

I began watching the TV series on the Internet and I felt in love with the characters (God saves Damon). Hence, I decided to read the books in order to get to the end before the Tv drama since I cannot wait week after week to know the developments of my favourite vampire- human affair. I struggle during a travel in Canada to find a library which displayed all books and I read it all during my flight back home (the guy near me was really concerned about my mental sanity).
Well, forget the books: if you like the TV adaptation, you’ll hate these books where people are flat and emotionless (Elena – above all – is hateful while Damon is just a nasty boys and not the gourgoues-villan-deeply-evil-but-heart-broken played on TV).
I know that after the fourth book there are others but I am not keen to waste my time this way: better waiting for torrent release on the Internet.

  • Disappointing to a Twilight Fan

I expect YA books to be a little juvenile for me, but I never felt that way with Stephenie Meyers' vampire lore. Lisa Smith's were just that - a little too juvenile. I'm told the stories get darker as the series progresses, so I do intend on following through with the second volume. However, after the first volume, all I can say is it seemed like a cross between Sweet Valley High and vampires. I would have loved it in high school...but 10 years later, it just seemed too silly to me.

  • The first 2 books are bad...really bad!!
Unless you think it normal that no one questions the actions/requests of a 17-year old spoiled girl, whose only merits are being good-looking (and being version 2.0 of a once-loved girl by 2 turned-vampire brothers), no matter how stupid/crazy/selfish they mi ... (continue)

Unless you think it normal that no one questions the actions/requests of a 17-year old spoiled girl, whose only merits are being good-looking (and being version 2.0 of a once-loved girl by 2 turned-vampire brothers), no matter how stupid/crazy/selfish they might sound...and if it ever happens that she doesn't get what she wants..she'll take it anyway because she basically doesn't care!!

So much more could have been done in these almost 500 pages with these charachters (especially Damon)..with some changes..it's a pity..kind of....

  • Started off as a typical teen story, popular girl wanting a guy, guy doesn't seem to want popular girl, which makes the popular girl want the guy even more. Vampire love...not comparable to Twilight, I found...

  • Yuck! Lame characters, silly story, ridiculous use of the Italian language and names. One does wonder though if Stephenie Meyer read at least the first book, as the similarities with Twilight are on the verge of embarassing!

  • The Vampire Diaries

While not flawless, these books still have a whole lot going for them. The plot and pacing are terrific which makes this quite a hard book to put down. The characters are deftly developed and believable.

It's easy to try to compare this series to Stephanie Meyer's Twilight series. And while on the surface you can pick up parallels between the two stories, there are actually more differences here than similarities. Elena is definitely nobody's doormat and both Stefan and Damon give way to their most dark and deadly impulses at least once.
