  Nobody in their right mind would ever read this on their own. All the people who had the huge luck to discover this poem were forced to academically. This is a puzzle. It makes absolutely no sense on first (second, third, eleventh....) reading. But when you finally have read and absorbed all the footnotes, and can read the whole text without stopping and see the big picture, it is a thing of beauty, a compendium of Western culture, refined irony, amazing imagery and perfect rhythm. I've been re-reading this regularly for about fifteen years now.
