A wonderful new novel from the Carnegie Medal winner. A riotous, wise, and gripping junior Discworld novel.

Up on the chalk downs known as The Wold, witches are banned -- ever since the Baron’s son vanished in the woods. Anyway, as all witches know, chalk is no good for magic.

Nine-year-old Tiffany Aching thinks her Granny Aching -- a wise shepherd -- might have been a witch, but now Granny Aching is dead and it’s up to Tiffany to work it all out when strange things begin happening. There’s a fairy-tale monster in the stream, a headless horseman and, strangest of all, the tiny blue men in kilts, the Wee Free Men, who have come looking for the new “hag”. These are the Nac Mac Feegles, the pictsies, who like nothing better than thievin’, fightin’ and drinkin’. When Tiffany’s young brother goes missing, Tiffany and the Wee Free Men must join forces to save him from the Queen of the Fairies.

One of the reasons that the world of young adult fiction is so widely enjoyed and wildly popular is that writers often benefit from the restrictions imposed by the genre. Freed from the necessity of spurious sex scenes, liberated from the requirement ... (read full critics)

To the story, then: Introduces Tiffany Aching, a pint-sized witch who must confront the queen of the Fae in order to rescue her brother, aided by those graceless charmers, the Nac Mac Feegle.

Charming, intelligent, witty - this is more than just any children's story. It's a DISCWORLD children's story.

  • The Labirynth shot out was awesome. Just imagine the Wee free men in evening suits and bow ties...

In general, this is awesome, screws up all the fairy-tale ideas of faeries and makes you laugh to death.

Plus, the Chalk was probably inspired by the British South-West (the white horse is in Uffington near Swindon), near where I'm living, which makes it even more awesome.

  • Absolutely great.
The story is really interesting, and the characters are just amazing. I love, love the Wee Free Men, banned from Fairyland for Drunk and Disorderly behaviour... a very fine caricature of the typical Scot, always ready for a fight but with a great heart.

She has First Sight and Second (and Third) Thoughts, she's in a hurry because the Queen of Faeries stole her little, sticky, cry-baby brother... she'll need more help than a frying pan and a grim determination: hopefully there's a Nac Mac Feegle clan nearby!

  • A good parody of some other works.

A good read. The the bit on the other world made me a wee bit dizzy though.

  • Funny, full of imagination, questioning about the conventional fairy-tales (sort of the movie Shrek), and lawyers, just that some parts are too complicated, made me had to re-read again and again, thus took me longer time to finish it.
