The cuteness and childlikeness of the characters and the placid riverside setting put this story quite out of time, but also make it difficult to connect with them at any deeper level like we might do with more mischievous or inventive animal characters in other books (Fantastic Mr. Fox, The rats of Nimh). My mother read it aloud to my brother and me, when we were children.
All parents who want to give their children - and themselves - a great gift, should do the same. Later I read it again, on my own, but that first reading was much better.
