The Woman in White (1859-60) is the first and greatest "Sensation Novel." Walter Hartright's mysterious midnight encounter with the woman in white draws him into a vortex of crime, poison, kidnapping, and international intrigue. This new critical edition is the first to use the original manuscript of the novel. John Sutherland examines Collins's contribution to Victorian fiction, traces his practices as a creator of plot, and provides a chronology of the novel's complicated events.

  • Book Review: The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins Share

The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins was published as a newspaper serial in 1859. In 1860 a collected edition of the chapters was published in book form. The fictional story is considered to be one of the first mystery novels, as well as one of the f ... (read full critics)

  • In Praise of Spiders

To slip the leash in the 19th century, it was usually enough to move without leaving a forwarding address, and that was how some in the working class shook off inconvenient debts and marriages. Most in the bourgeoisie lacked the option, however, beca ... (read full critics)

I happily re-read this for an English exam. Chillingly written. Well structured; in fact maybe too well structured: makes it seem unreal, the cleverness of its construction.

  • Good Victorian narrative, intriguing and entertaining. The first of its genre, sporting a woman in a detective role as one of the main characters, no less!
    Way, way better than Dickens…

I enjoyed this book a lot. I have to say I much preferred it to the Moonstone. The style was most enjoyable, particularly Hartwright and Marion's parts. The story was gripping and moving the whole way through and despite being very long I felt the pacing was really good. The only weak part I felt was the ending, which after it had been building for so long, the revelation of the "secret" and the fate of the two villains seemed rather poor.

I did enjoy the characterisation, the characters seemed vaguely stereotypical but were still likeable, and the villains not too over-the-top, everyone had a sense of realism to them. Marion was easily the best character, a very intelligent woman who was sacrificing everything for the well being of her half sister. I think it said something that the man fell in love with the beautiful dull sister instead of the ugly intelligent one, even though it was clear that he and Marion were a much better match. It was also an odd ending for her that she was supposed to live happily ever after as the "old maid" "companion" to her half-sister. It was almost as if there was some subtext there, except of course they were related! The woman in white herself I liked a lot, and wish she'd had more scenes and we'd heard more about her life.

It's hard to write a review of this without giving anything away. But I really enjoyed it and will definitely be reading more books by Willkie Collins.

  • It will keep you on tenterhooks

Jorge Luis Borges once said that Collins was a master of plot twists, uneasiness and unpredictable endings. I couldn't agree more.

The structure of the book is simply genius and so is the story!
