My professor for women's health assigned this book and it's the best thing I've read all year. Our current unit was mental health and the more I looked into the story the more I found allusions to OCD, schizotypal personality disorder, acute social phobia and even allusions to the confusing effects of psychoactives. And the ending! Damn!
People are discussing what brought her down, and a lot say her husband oppressed her. That's true, but somewhere she makes it sound as though her ailment was inherited: “a hereditary estate, I would say a haunted house and reach the height of romantic felicity – but that would be asking too much of fate!” like the house is a metaphor for madness. “There's one comfort – the baby is well and happy, and does not have to occupy this nursery with the horrid wallpaper...What a fortunate escape!” But it's all the same house, maybe the baby will grow up crazy too, especially if it's female...Continua
