Members of The Club of Queer Trades, a secretive social club based in London, are people who found unique and creative ways of supporting themselves. The narrator, one Mr. Swinburne, has the unusual hobby of collecting clubs. Through a series of adventures with his eccentric friend Basil Grant, he was able to penetrate (at the last chapter) the secrets of the Club of Queer Trades.

Now step into the shoes of G.K. Chesterton. You just came up with a brilliant premise for a novel. Now all you have to do is actually invent some strange trades. I honestly tried to think of something before reading this book but couldn't manage anything remotely interesting. Chesterton, being the brilliant man that he was, unsurprisingly dreamed up six trades. But I am somewhat relieved that his trades are only slightly more amusing than mine. They tend to be either too whimsical or too abstract. You can't support yourself financially with a whimsical or abstract job. Basically the premise doesn't work. The plots are simply too far fetched. However, the prose is up to Chesterton's normal level of brilliance. Every two sentences you read something absolutely surprisingly.

Finally I want to quickly mention that one of the 6 stories, "The Noticeable Conduct of Professor Chadd" is about the creation of an artificial language. It is unfortunately the weakest of the 6 stories. I only mention it because there aren't that many stories about this fascinating subject.
