More than half of the story consist of Wexford talking to Burden or Wexford recalling events. This gets weary, fast. The monster, when it eventually gets revealed, lacks any great monstrous impact.

we get to know all we possibly could want to know about wexford, but this is almost the only relevant feature of this book.
