Il libro merita per il tentativo della Bronte di sottolineare , tramite l'azione del protagonista, quanto l'istruzione fosse importante per le ragazze e che anch'esse potevano seriamente occuparsi di poesia e letteratura contrariamente allo stereotipo del tempo che voleva le ragazze che scrivevano e leggevano "poco serie".
