Introduction and Notes by Keith Wren, University of Kent at CanterburyA historical romance, The Three Musketeers tells the story of the early adventures of the young Gascon gentleman, D'Artagnan and his three friends from the regiment of the King's Musketeers - Athos, Porthos and Aramis.Under the watchful eye of their patron M. de Treville, the four defend the honour of the regiment against the guards of Cardinal Richelieu, and the honour of the queen against the machinations of the Cardinal himself as the power struggles of seventeenth century France are vividly played out in the background.

The best book I've ever read! I came to this late - and to be honest I wasn't expecting to enjoy it. A couple of pages in I was hooked and at least a couple of meals were left to go cold because of it!

Truly it's one of those stories where the characters are so alive, so wonderful, that when you finish it, you feel as if you're saying goodbye to some dear friends. The following books were also very good (although maybe only for die-hard fans), but this is the one that I've come back to time and again to enjoy the fast-paced adventures and intrigues that D'Artagnan, Aramis, Porthos, and Athos are involved in.
