Annwyl is a warrior woman that is feared by everyone. It’s been said that when she gets into a rage, she is fearless and can’t be defeated. Tough and hardened by war, she takes on whatever comes her way without blinking. Backed into a corner in a secluded glen, she is outnumbered and knows she is going to die. Peace will finally come, but she is going to take out as many men as she can before she breathes her last. Even when she is starting to black out, she fights, until she realizes that the men she is fighting that can still stand are running away. When she turns around to find out why, she comes face to face with a dragon. Feargus has made sure that his solitude is not disturbed by anyone by killing or driving away any human that comes into his forest. When he sees Annwyl, he is strangely drawn to the woman who fights to her last breath. When she turns around and calmly tells him to hurry up and kill her, he finds that he can’t, and takes her to his cave and makes sure she heals. So begins a strange relationship that neither one wants to end. But will she still love him when she finds out his secret? TO CHALLENGE A DRAGON is an awesome story that kept me absorbed until the end of the book. I loved the way Shelly Laurenston wrote the character of Annwyl. She is a woman that has been abused her whole life, but has managed to rise above it and challenge her brother for the throne. Annwyl is a brutal killer and has no guilt in what she does; the nickname Annwyl The Bloody was earned. When she is with Feargus I got to see her lighter side, the one that was almost crushed beneath her father and brother’s hands. Feargus and his siblings are great, the bickering and camaraderie were some of the best parts of the story. I do want to say that there is a lot of fighting and violence in this book, and it is not for people who don’t like that sort of thing. I felt it was an integral part of the story line to show what kind of life Annwyl had and how it had shaped her. It’s one of the things that made this story work for me, because it didn’t just sugarcoat the details. I will not hesitate to pick up another one of Shelly Laurenston’s books and highly recommend this one.
