Think James Bond. Savor classic cars like the 1958 Fiat 600 Jolly, the piano from the Hindenberg, modern dirigibles that fly passengers in comfort around the globe, state of the art computers with built-in explosives, and much more. Arrive in Bermuda ... (read full critics)

I felt reading this book was weirdly like rubber-necking at a horrible traffic accident. I'm not a huge fiction fan, and normally I would have abandoned it by the fifth chapter, but it was so bad, I kept reading simply because I kept saying, "Surely, it can't get any worse!" But it did! The character of Alex Hawke is supposed to be the star of this book, a real "James Bond" type hero. Funny, but I was nearly 300 pages in before Hawke did much of anything remotely resembling "action" (he spends the entire first part of the book in some ridiculous "romance"). When finally things with our "hero" heat up with a rescue mission, everything comes to a screeching halt for a boxing match?!?!? Right up until the last 100 pages, Hawke remains mostly clueless of the end of the world plot, and yet he's the one the world is supposed to be depending on to save them (groan!!!).

There is action, though. But the glory all seems to go to secondary characters, and . . . the bad guys! The villians get most of the face time, with much of what the various good guys do to stop them just seems to be almost second thought.
