以印度歷史為背景的小說，女主角是蒙兀兒王朝皇帝賈汗季的第20個也是最後一位妻子，後來成為大權在握、歷史留名的皇后-努爾．賈汗，在女性地位不彰的十六世紀印度，無疑是個異數。 本書從女主角的出生開始寫起，到結尾終於如願嫁給賈汗季成為皇后，有一部份寫到皇宮內廷的權位爭鬥，但是看過二月河寫康雍乾三朝的歷史小說後，這本書裏對宮廷鬥爭的著墨大概只有中學程度，重點大抵是群臣很喜歡鼓動印度王子造反，推翻老爸好讓自己早點登基，所以同樣的戲碼演了祖孫三代也不厭倦，另外對兒女情長的描寫也不少，是個融合印度歷史與浪漫奇情，很有異國風味的作品。 至於女主角在當上皇后後，如何成為歷史上了不起的女人，應該會在第二部的「玫瑰盛宴」裏交待吧。 另一個心得是，依照書裏的描寫，金銀珠寶多如流水的印度皇室，真是有錢啊！
