Grade 9 Up–When Bella Swan moves from sunny Phoenix to Forks, Washington, a damp and dreary town known for the most rainfall in the United States, to live with her dad, she isnt expecting to like it. But the level of hostility displayed by her standoffish high school biology lab partner, Edward Cullen, surprises her. After several strange interactions, his preternatural beauty, strength, and speed have her intrigued. Edward is just as fascinated with Bella, and their attraction to one another grows. As Bella discovers more about Edwards nature and his family, she is thrown headlong into a dangerous adventure that has her making a desperate sacrifice to save her one true love. One of the more original vampire constructs around, this recording of Stephenie Meyers debut novel (Megan Tingley Books, 2005) is narrated with great style by Ilyana Kadushin, who makes the infinitely romantic tale of star-crossed lovers resonate with a bittersweet edge.

    Anne Rice still rules!

This is a total waste of time. You're better off reading Anne Rice's books if you're interested in the vampire genre of literature. She at least has the decency to give her characters some strength of character, and not be all needy like Bella.

Maybe I'm just too 30 for this...but I found almost all the book deadly boring. Until the last pages (or - as I was listening to the audio-book - the last chapters) almost nothing happens: Bella understands things the reader guesses from the beginning with a painstakingly slow pace. Half of the dialogues of the book consists of lines like "I love you - No, you shouldn't - My love is dangerous - But I love you all the same - But you shouldn't, I'm a monster"...aka, the same things you told (or were told) to that girl/boy (presumably not a vampire) you were just not that into in your highschool years.

The characters are not bad, and the vampires have always their lot of charm: what it's missing here is a proper plot and, above all, a bit of humor. All this romance with a touch of b-movie/pulp-ishness ("OMG! My boyfriend is a Vampire!") could have been real fun.

Let's hope for the next ones..

Since I teach high school, I felt obligated to read this series. I never would have paid for them (the box set is RIDICULOUSLY expensive), and they are never available in the library... BUT I have a dear friend in the publishing business (she gives me ALL my books!) who hooked me up with the collector set. I read them so as to be better able to relate to my teenage students.
It was easy and sort of fun to read, though I found the descriptions tedious at times. I also loathed the main character. She happens to be the exact one that my female students so strongly relate to. Well, I guess I am almost 30 and the teenage angst seems melodramatic and overdone to me.
Oh well... I read all 4 in the series. If you like vampires and wish you could date one, then this is the series for you.
Also if you think secretly you are NOT actually a boring, average human with no special skills or talents, then you may relate to Bella. Ugh.
