This is an account of the Tokyo subway gas attack in 1995, in which 12 people died, as told to Murakami by the survivors and the Aum cult members responsible for carrying out such an outrage.

They aren't all criminals, and some of them have truly pure hearts. I know many people like that andd I feel sorry for them. They don't fit into the system because they're not comfortable with it, or because they've been excluded from it.
