Fino all'ultimo, senza nessuna certezza.

The novel is consistent with the "characteristic" that Kay Scarpetta would be face to face with the evil killer towards the end. Though the plots are somewhat interesting and quite engaging, one doesn't feel that there is anything particularly new or unsual. I feel that the author tries to make use of US military/defense heavy machineries or weapons to impress upon the readers. Though the AOL internet technology (such as chat room) in 1990's wouldn't impress anybody any more, it doesn't really seem too obsolete either. In my opinion, the chat room serves similar functions as what we have now like facebook or twitter (though the latter offer more).

To me, one interesting element is that the author included the government shutdown in 1995/6 which we got to experience similarly again in 2013. On p.231(line 3-5), it was said: "the only blue-suited scientists working this furloughed day were those who had cared enough to come in anyway". But actually, it's illegal for furloughed employees to come to work, even by volunteering ! I believe this is a point that the author has missed :-)

The biological terrorism was probably almost avant-garde in those years. The (unsuccessful) anthrax attack in 2001 happened a few years after this novel was published. Though virus attack might not be completely new even in 1990's, US probably seriously thought about "terrorism" only after 9/11 in 2001. In this sense, the author has shown her foresight.

This is probably a typical Scarpetta series. The character of the protagonists such as Kay and Benton in this novel is very consistent with the rest of the Scarpetta series. They're so smart and so righteous compared to the rest of the world. Maybe, Marino is a bit more earthly and this has made him more likable even though he might be about the least smart person (in terms of science and psychology etc.) in this book.
