"I will be the Vampire Lestat for all to see. A symbol, a freak of nature - something loved, something despised, all of those things. I tell you I can't give it up. I can't miss. And quite frankly I am not in the least afraid."

Second in the series - The Vampire Chronicles

If I picked this up today and read it again, perhaps it wouldn't get quite the same high marks, but at the time, I was eating up anything I could find on vampires. I loved this.

It took me a long time to get into this book... I was intrigued to find out about Lestat growing up and becoming a vampire, but his depressing friend Nicki was extremely tiresome! It bored me and I stopped caring up until Armand started to tell his story of Marius, and then Marius his enthralling story of the ancients and his own making. The old stories were simply magical, and they began to really compel me to continue reading.

So from about halfway through I got interested again and really cared about Lestat. Even though this novel was a series of stories-within-a-story, I think it really helped to flesh out Anne Rice's world of vampires. We find out where they came from and how they began, how they have changed over the centuries, and we meet some truly charismatic vampires with involving secrets.

I was very interested that there was a cliffhanger setting up Queen of the Damned. The fleshing-out of the vampire world was necessary, I feel, to introduce the power and thrall of Akasha - which I can only guess at from seeing the movie of 'The Queen of the Damned'.

I'm kind of wishing I was Marius' friend now. He's super-cool and interesting.

  • I highly enjoyed this book as it shows Lestat's side of events before, during and after he met Louis. Rice portrays Lestat no longer as a sort of villian but as witty and a complex character with his own personal tragedies and struggles.
