"Venuto al mondo" is all about missing: missing the persons you care most about, about missing what seems to be given to everyone but to you, about the missing of a non-born child and about how strong the longing for it can be... The story seems to be simple at the beginning, but reveals to be much more complicated at the end, so I was curious and focused untill the end of the book.
Most of the book is composed of the memories of the protagonist. All those memories and "inner speech", as well as the rather serious themes tend to make the book rather dramatic. The fact that all this missing has the Yugoslavian war as background probably also doesn't make the book any lighter. Only the madness of the Yugoslavian friend and poet made me laugh occasionally (whereas a lot of other things made me cry).
I especially liked the photographer, who likes to takes pictures of puddles and pools. The act of taking pictures is clearly more important to him than the results, which especially shows when the photographer doesn't even care anymore to put a film in his camera... I also liked the smells in the book, which are many (it is a book of memories, of course): there is the small of war, of the foul breaths of lovers, the garlic breath of the Balcan, and of course, the smell of newborn babies ...

Ho pianto dalla seconda pagina fino all'ultima. Che sceme che siamo noi donne: ci piace piangere. Bello il libro, bellissmo. Mi piace molto la Mazzantini, anche se irrita il fatto che fa ccia i suoi libri già per farci un film (il regista si sa in anticipo). Pero' lei secondo me è bravissima, è inte ... (continue)

Ho pianto dalla seconda pagina fino all'ultima. Che sceme che siamo noi donne: ci piace piangere. Bello il libro, bellissmo. Mi piace molto la Mazzantini, anche se irrita il fatto che fa ccia i suoi libri già per farci un film (il regista si sa in anticipo). Pero' lei secondo me è bravissima, è intelligentissima, sa cosa dire per muovere le corde giuste.

Gemma e Diego si incontrano una notte a Sarajevo. È il 1984. Lei, perfettina e composta, aspirante giornalista, è promessa sposa ad un altro uomo e deve tornare a Roma; lui, orfano di padre, arruffato fotografo di pozzanghere, deve tornare a Genova. Quella notte per loro tutto cambierà. Sarà solo l’inizio di una storia lunga una vita, complessa, articolata, fatta di amore e di guerra, di sangue e di poesia, di Roma e di Sarajevo, di benessere e di miseria, di conformismo e di ribellione, narrata dalla Mazzantini con la sua usuale abilità nel raccontare per immagini e pensieri, con periodi brevi, pennellate colorate che talvolta si trasformano in colpi di mortaio dritti al cuore di chi legge. Impossibile non piangere sulla maternità negata di Gemma, sulla sua guerra personale che la porterà a perdere l’amore e a ritrovarlo in altri occhi, in un’altra nuca, sulla guerra di Bosnia che tutto cambierà irrimediabilmente, con la sua scia di morti, di violenze incancellabili, di soprusi inimmaginabili. Gojko, Mima, Sebina, Armando, Aska, Ante, sono personaggi indimenticabili e non vorresti lasciarli andare. Poi, quando pensi che il tuo cuore non reggerà ad altro dolore, quando inizi a pensare che il viaggio di Gemma e Pietro sulle ultime strade calpestate da Diego sarà un ritrovare pace, la Mazzantini ti dà il colpo di grazia, con un finale che ti toglie il fiato.

I was taken from one page to another...through two stories both of them strong, mixed into one...does it amplifies the strenght of both..i think yes. But what I did not like is the feeling after i closed the book each time...the feeling of sadness and fear of loosing my love ones. The realisation how fragile human beings are and all the bad things that can hapen to interupt the course of life. Maybe because I already saw a part of this war.
