a fine portrait of a devious mind which reminded me of "the turn of the screw", set in the new england of the creepy tales told by hawthorne and lovecraft. the author died at 49 (shortly after the publication of this book) from pills, booze, overeating, a recluse in her own room - quite a mimicry of ...
