In November 1965, some 450 men of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry, under the command of Lt. Col. Hal Moore, were dropped by helicopter into a small clearing in the Ia Drang Valley. They were immediately surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese soldiers. Three days later, only two and a half miles away, a sister battalion was chopped to pieces. Together, these actions at the landing zones X-Ray and Albany constituted one of the most savage and significant battles of the Vietnam War.

    This book gives an hour by hour account (almost!) of the first battle that the Americans had with the North Vietnamese in 1967. The book was written in 1992 after extensive investigation by the author - meeting with the Vietnamese General who had led the Vietnamese against the Americans in battle. The bravery of these young men is staggering. Little did they know then just how long the war was to last - or what the outcome would be. General Moore led the Americans - he was there at the front all the time, and he acknowledges the bravery of the NVA soldiers. The Americans fought against overwhelming odds in terms of men - but their helicopter and fire power was far superior to the NVA. The battle of Ia Drang was one of sacrifice, courage and endurance. A first class book!

  • Wow

    I cant believe this story, I saw the movie first but, the book is a million times better. You can not believe what these soldiers went through. Its a must read.
