Michael Marshall Smith has two main qualities: he's extremely readable and has a lot of weird ideas. So I thought that short stories wuold fit him even better than the novels I've read before; but I was wrong. Mind you the book is good, you'll find all the funny ramblings that make Smith clever and deep at the same time (his descriptions of the mundane activities of the human race are always a treasure of wisdom) but some of these stories lack the coherence and the strong built that most of his novels have. Maybe this is due to the fact that these stories cover a wide range of years, but it's my humble opinion that in some of them the Stephen King approach doesn't fit 100% with Smith's style. In any case Smith is good so you'll find your favorite story and have a reasonable good time reading all, but don't expect to reach the peak of Spares and the other novels.
