this is an excellent book that analyzes common medical complaints, both physical and mental, in relation to their possible evolutionary benefits. from symptoms of the common cold to depression to myopia, Drs Nesse and Williams provide possible explanations of why and how these problems developed and may be helpful.
as a person who constantly wondered why the body is so inefficient, this book was extremely satisfying, as it lays out that the body is -not- inefficient at all. many of the problems have hidden benefits either to the individual, their progeny, or the species. it only seems to be terrible from the shortsighted perspective of an individual. small comfort perhaps for those in pain, but a small comfort is better than none at all....Continua
