  Istantanee. Attimi di vita, storie di persone a volte normali, altre un po' meno. Leggere un racconto di Carver è un po' come guardare un quadro di Hopper. Immagini inquietanti, spesso senza un perché, luci al neon che illuminano frammenti di una quotidianità di una semplicità e una calma spiazzanti, intrise di intensa drammaticità. Inquadrature di camere da letto e cucine, visioni voyeuristiche su verande e finestre aperte, spaccati di vita nei quali siamo immersi in maniera quasi brutale, paure così consuete da risultarci a tratti familiari.
  Spesso non succede niente, in queste pagine, non c'è nessun finale. Ma se si guarda un po' più a fondo, qualcosa accade. In una staticità disarmante, snervante, c'è sempre la presa di coscienza di una nuova condizione, di una realtà, di qualcosa di inevitabile. E nessuno dei personaggi potrà fuggire. Dopo aver spiato le loro vite ne usciamo improvvisamente, senza aver capito o conosciuto niente di nuovo, solo con una curiosità morbosa di sapere cosa succederà. Talmente incompleto, frammentato e inquietante che leggere il racconto successivo diventa, semplicemente, necessario.

  I enjoy short stories, which is why I thought I'd give this book a go. I'd never read anything by Carver before, but the comparisons to Chekhov made on the cover drew me in.

  I enjoy short stories, which is why I thought I'd give this book a go. I'd never read anything by Carver before, but the comparisons to Chekhov made on the cover drew me in.

  To be honest I was a little disappointed. This book might impress some people, Americans of a certain older generation I imagine, but for me I found it hard. The characters were just difficult for me to identify with, their personalities, their lives, their locations. I felt I shared little to nothing in common with them. The writing itself was exceptional and was nothing short of what I'd expect from such an esteemed author, but I just found it hard to engage myself.

  My first English Carver's....
  Oh my God he is really what I thought...
  simply wonderful, with his keen irony and his Hopper's landscape and description...
  I want more... and more Carver..
  maybe now I'm going to be addicted to him...
