Absolutely breathtaking, dreamy tale of an intricate family of actors against a realistic British backdrop spanning most of the 20th century.

Must be teeming with hints at actual persons in that century's show business in the UK and US, while the introduction tells us of dozens of references and nods to Shakespeare's plays. Both of these are so far out of my reach I wish for an annotated version.

Amazing references to popular or everyday language, such as we get hints of in Terry Pratchett's witches' language, when they choose a mundane, earthly one.

So much fun to read, that one almost forgets how precious an insight into a key western civilization and how it evolved since the time most of the world map "was pink" - that hint I caught, from early reading of my parents' schoolbook atlas. ...Continua
