This book was a bit of a flatliner when it came to plot and really gripping storylines (yes, even for a travelogue of sorts). It seemed to meander on like a journal, with amusing stories, anecdotes but nothing incredibly riveting. However, it was a fascinating insight into Greek culture. Very interesting, if not wildly engaging.

This was, without doubt, the most inspirational book I have ever read, both from a human and cultural perspective.

So often, we think of "leaving it all behind", roughing it in a foreign country and going on a journey of self-discovery as things you do when you're young, before you settle down.

This book gives hope to all of us who worry that marriage and children and domesticity spells the end to our wanderlust. AND, it's a powerful commentary on how, despite deep cultural divides, our compassion and humanity still connects us all at the most basic level.
