I picked up this book in an second hand book store in Salamanca Market, Hobart, Tasmania. This book is about an Australian couple who are very much concern about the coming energy crisis, that they decided to move to the country from the city to establish a self-sustaining farm.
When the author first heard about Peak Oil - the decline of oil production after the peak production of oil in the field, she was in shock. Not only Peak Oil is inevitable, but the information is not in the main stream media and the Australian Government did not seem to do anything about it. When she dig deeper into the issue of Peak Oil, she found out that the city life she took for granted is totally depended on oil. Without cheap oil, life in the city will e hard and unlivable. After a period of fear and rage, she finally accept the truth that there will be an end to cheap oil and made the move to the country.
I was quite surprised to read that the author is so shocked about our dependent on oil for city life to go on. I have been reading and studying about sustainability and the problem our world is facing that all these are common knowledge to me. So that I don't notice that what is common knowledge to me may not be to others.
I am happy that the author used permacultural method to build their sustainable farm when she mentioned that they actually invited Geoff Lawton to design their farm, I am thrilled. The permaculture information mentioned in this book felt like revision for me. It reminded me of all I have learnt studying in Geoff's farm during a 10 week internship program. I can sort of visualize him walking on the author's farm talking. I really am glad that permaculture way worked out well and it gets me more wanted to have my own farm!
This book is full of funny little stories that will make you laugh. The experiences the author shared in this book is very valuable for anyone who want to establish a sustainable settlement. There is a chapter introducing permaculture and any permaculture newbies can get some idea what permaculture is about. It is a good book and I recommend it to everyone.
