If you have a fear of deep water, sharks, and being lost at sea, then you can look forward to as much terror in this book as any modern day thriller, except for the fact that everything in this book really happened. This is the story of the worst naval disaster in U.S. history. It took place two weeks before Japan surrendered at the end of WWII, so the event itself was upstaged by the dropping of the atomic bomb (which ironically was facilitated by the very ship involved). History and suspense rolled into one---outstanding read. Five stars, would give more if possible.
Paulette Jiles embellishes on the historical Britt Johnson, a freed slave who moved to Texas with his family toward the end of the Civil War. Would recommend to afficionados of historical fiction.
Good quick read. Classified as YA literature, but easily entertaining for us old folks. I love to read Chris Bojhalian but this was very painful to read. Without giving away the plot---just let your imagination take it from the title and you can put it together. Would probably have rated it between 3 and 4.

The girl she used to be
I was pretty disappointed with this book. I thought it would be meatier. Pretty much just a romance. If that's your fare, then you will like this.
