E' veramente difficile nel breve spazio di un racconto appassionare il lettore a vite apparentemente estranee... ed è proprio in questo "apparentemente" che si rivela la bravura di Jhumpa Lahiri. Perché queste vite così lontane e diverse, in cui il retaggio della cultura indiana si incontra e si scontra con l'essere nati "occidentali", in realtà parlano di noi, delle nostre piccole gioie e sconfitte, delle nostre meschinità ma anche della nostra capacità di amare. E mi commuovono.

E' un gioco, ma un gioco divertente e ben scritto. Chi non si è sentita almeno una volta in vita sua un po' Elizabeth Bennet?
Soprattutto, una Elizabeth Bennet che lungi dal rimanere focalizzata sull'unico obiettivo di Mr.Darcy, si destreggia fra i protagonisti maschili di tutti i più famosi romanzi di Jane Austen, riuscendo a spezzare il cuore a ciascuno di loro... che soddisfazione!

Avrebbe potuto essere l'ennesima saga familiare... e invece i personaggi ti diventano amici, e ti identifichi in loro nonostante la distanza culturale.
Alla fine mi sono anche commossa, sara' che come il protagonista mi ritrovavo a pensare di "cominciare davvero" a un po' piu' di trent'anni...

Fra l'altro, il film di Mira Nair, pur dovendo tagliare assai, e' secondo me all'altezza del libro, ne riproduce fedelmente l'atmosfera.
