I thought Gaiman's American Gods was a better story within the same vein. However, if you know a bit about African folklore or are interesting in it, this book has an "inventive" take on them and was entertaining.

Seemed like it was a transitional book rather than something that could stand alone.
The Road
but it was depressing because once I got into the book, the ending seemed too clean and too easily wrapped up. I just didn't buy into the ending.
