this is a good summer read, a lighthearted break amongst the classics that people usually try to face during the holidays.
it keeps you entertained, it keeps you company, it makes you want to cook and then makes you want to share yourself (and the food you prepared). although not exactly a masterp ... (

let's get this straight: it's December, almost Christmas and we are all trying to be good. it's the moment of good feelings and good propositions, good avice, good wine: all good and goodness and sweetness and cheesyness.
this book fits in perfectly: I shed more than a tear over it (the kind of tears that if you stepped back and looked at yourself from the distance you'd think you're an idiot) and is full of good feelings and good advice. well, not full, it has 5 pieces of advice. 5 lessons that Eddie, our main character, has to learn.
Eddie dies the day of his 83rd birthday, doing what he had been doing all his life: the maintenance man in an amusement park. and he goes to heaven, our Eddie, because otherwise what kind of book would it be? but heaven, he learns soon, is not the place of idleness and divination that one imagines throughout life: it's the place made for understanding your life on earth.
that's why in heaven everyone meets 5 people, and each of them were in the life of the newcomer for a reason, maybe unknown to both at the time. a couple of the souls Eddie meets, he hasn't even really met in his earthly life, but their lives have affected his in one way or another.
so by telling us the life of Eddie and of his five people, Albom discloses the 5 lessons. all stuff we already know, of course, but that we tend to forget and that sometimes it's useful to dust off.
a cheesy book, indeed, and full of goodness, as I was saying. but it does get 4 stars. and if we don't read these books at Christmas time, when are we to read them?
