  Autentico, illuminante, prezioso... sì assolutamente, ma emotivamente pesantissimo! Non posso che leggerlo a singhiozzo, poche lettere per volta, un giorno sì e centoventi no.

  Quando la storia è un macigno anche in un libretto di 200 pagine!

  Narrative – Though these stories cannot be called a masterpiece of the English literature, I still found some pleasure in reading them. Maybe it was precisely the notion of not reading something considered a masterpiece, and of not plunging into the insights of one of the “voices of the century” – on the contrary, to be approaching a work literary canons have put aside and quite forgotten – that drove me into the reading of these stories. I found them especially interesting because they revealed a perspective so different from what I usually live, read or know about.
  What I found was a simple, possibly even demure, and honest tone in the writing, which is in tune with the general impression of stillness and tranquillity that I imagine the narrative means to convey. And I liked that, it was comfortable. And the cruelty, the puritan hypocrisy, the selfishness and racial prevarications that shaped this dreamy world only ever pop out briefly, now and then, here and there, like the bubbles some heavy fish might release from the depth of a lagoon, without the smoothness of the surface ever being troubled by the huntings and deaths below – without them even being involved in the drama. Which might mean something important.

  Ideology – I had the impression that explicit insights on culture, colonialism and exoticism are shifting continuously, in accord with each character's perspective, so that it is not so simple, in the end, to understand which one is the author's, if is one to be found at all. Occasional claims of a superiority of “the white civilization” above that of the natives are so overt that is difficult to imagine that they can be genuine as well, even for a publication from 1921. One is initially tempted to read the whole narrative as a typical Victorian depiction of life in the Colonies, i.e. as the attempted escape to an alternative exotic world – an interpretation which is soon to be rejected, for traces of corruption soon come to spoil the heaven-like atmosphere.

  Characters – Those characters between which conflict arises never communicate and try to understand one another's point of view; though living in strict contact, they seem to be observing each other from a distance, failing to acknowledge that mere observation of the other's external manifestations and value system is not equal comprehension of them (this is fully the case in The Pool, I think). In fact, though they possess an idea of mutual differences and idiosyncrasies, no one ever consider of giving up something in order to compromise. The general impression is that of a series of individuals who – even though perfectly capable of rather radical decisions, such as giving up a secure life and career to start an exotic adventure over seas, or escaping from the dullness of 'civilized life' to the uncontaminated South Sea Island, or overcoming all sorts of mental and physical obstacles between themselves and the object of their desires – are incapable of breaking away from the mental schemes of which they truly are the victims. They remain prisoners of themselves, incapable of understanding, loving or giving.

  So it's probably worth reading.

  Bellino. Ho apprezzato la scelta dell'autore di parlare del Rwanda "normale", in pace, aiutandoci così a creare un'immagine alternativa di questo paese: non quella delle guerre civili e del genocidio, quella per cui alla lunga l'associazione "Africa-guerra" ci risulta normale e non riusciamo a immaginare la possibilità (la probabilità!) di un'Africa diversa.
  Slavoj Žižek ha detto, a proposito dei Balcani e della considerazione (in questo caso espressa nel cinema) che l'Europa occidentale ha dell'ex-Jugoslavia, che finché essi, nell'immaginario collettivo, saranno "intrappolati nel sogno degli altri", degli europei, "saranno fottuti"(^). Il sogno di cui Žižek parla non è che la narrazione - storica, politica, mitica, letteraria...- di un paese, di un fatto storico, di una religione, di un'etnia... Essa guida le coscienze individuali, l'opinione pubblica, la cultura, le nostre (mancate) scelte, quindi la storia; la somma delle singole narrazioni cui siamo familiari traccia la nostra mappa del mondo, delinea la nostra identità e quella degli altri. E finché un gruppo non riesce a imporre agli altri gruppi la narrazione che esso stesso produce di sé - e degli altri - esso non sarà mai riconosciuto per quello che è e crede di essere, ma per quello che gli altri credono (vogliono) che sia, ergo non sarà mai libero.
  Per questo mi piacerebbe leggere anche una storia del genere sul Rwanda scritta da un rwandese, in futuro. E da un bosniaco, da un kosovaro, da un curdo...

In fact, the Borderlands are physically present wherever two cultures edge each other, where people of different races occupy the same territory, where under, lower, middle and upper classes touch, where the space between two individuals shrinks with intimacy.”

  “Gloria went on to write many other important essays that expanded her theories, gave lectures and lengthy interviews, collected the work of others into published books, and started a myriad projects–all the while giving herself over and over to the community she had helped create. But it is in the work between these two covers where she did for herself what she has done, and continues to do, for so many, many others.   Borderlands/La Frontera per me è un'opera importante sotto tanti punti di vista, anche se io non sono americana, non sono Chicana, né messicana, né lesbica, né una scrittrice, non appartengo alla generazione X né a un'etnia minoritaria, né parlo una lingua madre disconosciuta e delegittimata, né sono un'emarginata economica. Ma forse attraverso frontiere, come faceva Gloria Anzaldúa e come fanno tante migliaia di noi ogni giorno su questa terra martoriata.
  E non c'è bisogno di essere un(a) migrante per attraversare frontiere, anzi il migrare non sempre è una garanzia sufficiente dell'attraversamento mentale, spirituale delle frontiere dentro di noi, che sono poi le barriere che ci tengono separati/e gli uni dagli altri, le une dalle altre, ognun@ intrappolat@ nella sua gabbia di pregiudizio, discriminazione, paura, repressione, diffidenza.

  Gloria Anzaldúa ha sofferto immensamente per riuscire a lasciarsi alle spalle le frontiere che le impedivano di vivere felice, per farsi sicura ed orgogliosa nel proclamare le sue identità al mondo, alle comunità di cui era parte. Forse questo sforzo non sarebbe stato compiuto se a motivarlo non ci fosse stata tanta cattiveria riversata sulla Gloria bambina ed adolescente, sulle donne della sua comunità, sulla sua comunità intera. Una volta ho sentito Cynthia Rodriguez dire che è “profondamente convinta che dal dolore, dopo il lutto, possano sorgere una forza ed un coraggio mai sognati prima”, e ne sono convinta anche io. Ma quello che vogliamo, profondamente, sono società in cui il dolore non venga più inflitto inutilmente – che si tratti di vittime dei narcos, come nel caso di Rodriguez, o di ideologie che innalzano muri, frontiere di filo spinato e di discriminazione, come nel caso di tutti noi – ed in questo libro Gloria racconta come si è aperta la sua personale strada per questa rivoluzione.

  Che è una rivoluzione spirituale prima che sociale e politica. Scrive Gloria: “Awareness of our situation must come before inner changes, which in turn come before changes in society. Nothing happens in the 'real' world unless it first happens in the images in our heads.” (Borderlands, p.109)
  Anzaldúa non è una materialista, tutt'altro. Da quello che scrive immagino che abbia rifiutato (superato?) il materialismo dialettico, un modello che non riusciva a soddisfare la sua volontà di parlare non solo alla testa, ma anche alla pancia, al cuore, alle orecchie, all'immaginazione e alle paure degli uomini e delle donne (e infatti il linguaggio che ha elaborato è completamente nuovo, definirlo 'multilingue' è limitarsi all'ovvio). È difficile per me entrare in sintonia con qualcuno che mi parla di anima, di spirito degli antenati e del deserto, di Coatlicue, e che ne parla come parla della madre, del prete, dell'insegnante, del poeta, delle istituzioni, delle compagne femministe. Ma quando ci riesco a volte è un sollievo – perché non di solo pane vive l'uomo – e così è stato, dopo qualche mal di pancia, con Gloria Anzaldúa.
  Ho un po' arricciato il naso a certi suoi appelli ai Chicanos, claro: il rischio di cadere in tentazioni nazionalistiche è sempre dietro l'angolo e le parole vanno ben pensate. Ma il bello della visione di Gloria Anzaldúa è che, a ben vedere, questo rischio sia annulla in virtù dello stesso assunto di base della sua filosofia (o 'attivismo spirituale', come lo chiamava lei), cioè che le frontiere vanno scoperte non solo perché, a quel punto, si possa decidere da che parte stare, ma anche per poterle attraversare e riattraversare, conoscere chi c'è di là, e tornare indietro se si vuole. Ma se sono state attraversate sul serio (cioè nella mente), non si vuole mai.
  Questo per dire che, nonostante le basi delle teorie di Anzaldúa siano in parte incompatibili con le mie idee, nonostante il suo stile a volte non mi piaccia, un confronto fruttuoso è stato possibile, proprio perché Anzaldúa, più che indicare un fine, indica una via. E quella è percorribile per tutti/e.

  Qualche ultima riflessione vorrei dedicarla a quello che è secondo me il potenziale del lavoro di Gloria Anzaldúa per noi giovani e meno giovani oggi, per questa cosiddetta 'generazione Y' di tutto il mondo tanto ardentemente in rivolta in questi mesi.
  Bene, in questa epoca di migrazioni, viaggi intercontinentali in un giorno e di impollinazioni incrociate a mezzo internet, tutti/e noi siamo potenziali abitanti delle terre di frontiera, fisiche e mentali, siamo tutti/e parziali e frammentari(e). In qualunque punto del mondo, in qualunque classe sociale. Sfido qualunque ventenne a dire che si trova bene – che vive in piena dignità – nel mondo della generazione che l'ha cresciut@: religiosità ottusa, donna-oggetto, mutui accesi per andare all'università, lavoro calpestato, schiavitù, apologia dell'arroganza, razzismo, spazi sociali spianati, discriminazione religiosa, discriminazione di genere, gloria per gli affamatori e sputi in faccia per i poveri, aver paura di diventare un(a) fallit@, aver paura di far sapere alla famiglia che si è omosessuali.
  Essendo cresciuti/e dentro sovrastrutture culturali così simili a gabbie le cose sono due: restare, o attraversare la frontiera e scegliere di vivere in un mondo in costruzione dove sì, tutto è precario, ma che ognun@ possa dire suo.
  Dove la contaminazione sarà il modo naturale di approcciarci alla cultura, all'arte, all'altro, la sinergia il nostro modo di operare, anche dovessimo farlo da un dispositivo Apple! E soprattutto, lo sforzo sarà continuo: non illudiamoci che, superata una frontiera, troveremo la terra promessa. Ogni individuo è un mondo con i suoi continenti, i suoi oceani e le sue frontiere: infranta la prima, non faremo che scoprire altri uomini e donne, altre frontiere una dopo l'altra, non faremo che conoscerle, confrontarci, romperle, parlarne, decidere se abbattere, costruirne altre, modificare i tracciati, unirci, dividerci, costruire strade da una parte all'altra finché morte non ci separi.
  “May we do work that matters. Let us be the healing of the wound.”

  Ricomponendomi, direi che poche letture possono infondere tanta energia quanto Borderlands/La Frontera in un'anima che si senta anche solo un po' a disagio nella società in cui vive. Inutile stare a cercare di dare un'idea del perché in modo rigoroso, credo che questo libro non possa essere raccontato, ma solo letto, e se ho scritto così tanto è solo per cercare di far telematicamente capire al(la) possibile lettore/lettrice-acquirente di cosa si tratta.

  A questo punto posso solo dire: se vi sentite sbagliati/e e non capite il perché; se non sapete chi sono i/le Chican@s; se volete cambiare il mondo ma non sapete da dove cominciare; se siete stanchi/e di dover giustificare il modo in cui parlate, quello che mangiate, le persone che amate, le vostre malattie, le vostre idee politiche, la vostra cultura; se non avete il coraggio di uscire dalla quella dei vostri genitori; se siete depressi/e perché vi sembra che niente cambi mai, leggete Borderlands/La Frontera, è come una barretta energetica per il/la migrante stanc@ di attraversare il deserto.
